How to make Fried Meat Pies
This recipe makes about 7 large meat pies.
The Meat Pie Dough Recipe
Step 1. Sift flour in a bowl, add the baking powder, sugar and salt. Mix.
Step 2. Add the margarine, mix with the flour until you get a crumb like texture, like bread crumbs. This might take a few minutes so a little patience is needed here .
Step 3. Add 1 beaten egg, then add a little cold water and mix with the flour.
***The dough should NOT be sticky or overly soft, so add only a little cold water at a time as you mix until you get a solid dough. Don’t add all the water at once. You will probably end up not using the whole cup of water, you need just enough water to form a solid dough. Be sure to use chilled water to prevent or minimize the risk of having a sticky dough.
Step 4. Work the dough. Supplement with a sprinkle of flour at a time if necessary and knead lightly until you get a solid but smooth and soft dough.
Step 5. Cover the dough with a plastic wrap then leave the dough to sit for a while while you prepare the filling. If you didn’t use chilled water in step 3, let the dough sit in the fridge for about 10 to 15 minutes to get rid of any stickiness and to solidify the dough.
For The Meat Pie Filling
Step 1. Chop the onions and garlic. Set aside.
Step 2. In a bowl, mix the minced beef with all the spices and seasoning mentioned or you can season with any seasoning you want.
Step 3. Add a little vegetable oil to a pan (enough to fry the minced meat), heat up, add the chopped onion and garlic, saute for about 2 minutes then add the seasoned minced meat and fry until it is no longer pink. Once the meat is cooked, add the flour mixture (2 tablespoons of flour mixed with about 1/2 cup of water), stir and let it cook for 3 minutes or until the water dries up. The flour and water mixture is basically to soften the filling. Done. Set Aside.
Fried Meat Pie Recipe
Step 1. Coat your work surface with a little flour, using a rolling pin, flatten the already prepared meat pie dough. Break one egg into a bowl, beat and set aside.
Step 2. Depending on how big you want the pies, use something with a round surface(a round cookie cutter or a large cup) to cut a hole in the dough.
Step 3. Take out the cut dough, flatten again with your rolling pin. Add 1 tablespoon of potato flakes to the center of the dough, then add as much minced meat as you like, Close the dough sideways, then design it. You can use a fork to create designs by pressing it down at the edge of the dough or use one finger to create spaced dots at the edge of the dough, the design choice is up to you.
Step 4. Using a pastry brush (or a couple of your fingers if you don’t have a pastry brush), coat the edge of the dough with a little of the beaten egg. Nothing too much, just some light coating. This is to seal up the dough and prevent the dough from splitting when frying. Set the dough aside.
Step 5. Cut out another dough again, fill up, close, coat the edges with a little egg, do this repeatedly until you have exhausted the dough and filling.
Step 6. Add vegetable oil to a pot (enough because this is deep fried), heat up until hot, place your meat pies (don’t overcrowd the pot) in the oil and fry until it is golden brown and done.
That’s it. Serve alone with any dip of your choice.
You can substitute meat for fish, then it becomes fish pies :)
This recipe is for fried meat pie only, you would need more butter / margarine for baked meat pie.
