How to make Buns
This recipe makes about 10 Buns.
Step 1. Sift the flour into a bowl, add the baking powder, sugar, salt, nutmeg and mix.
Step 2. Dissolve the milk in lukewarm water (about 1/2 cup), add it to a bowl or add 1/2 cup of liquid milk to a bowl, break and add the egg, add the melted butter and vanilla extract. Mix until all the ingredients are combined.
Step 3. Pour the egg and milk mixture into the flour, mix gently until all the ingredients are combined. The resulting batter should be smooth, sticky and semi thick. See the third picture for what the batter looks like.
Step 4. Add vegetable oil to a pot, add enough because buns is deep fried and you don’t want to end up with flat looking buns. Heat up until hot (but not too hot so you won’t have a cooked outside and an under cooked inside). Test by putting a little of the batter in the oil, if it browns immediately, your oil is too hot. I should sizzle and start frying without browning immediately. At the same time, don’t fry on low heat because it may soak up oil.
Step 5. Scoop some of the batter into your hands and drop it vertically through your fist into the oil. Don’t scoop too much batter because the buns may split inside the oil when it starts to cook.
Step 6. Fry the buns until done. If you have a second batch, bring down the oil for a couple of minutes to cool then put it back on low heat and gradually increase the heat as you go.
Your buns is done. Serve with any beverage of your choice. I served mine with some coconut, tiger nut and dates drink. Recipe for the drink is linked down below.
